California-based Amyris is focused on using sustainable materials, including yeast and plant sugars, to create petroleum-free products like the hydrocarbon farnesene, which can be used in diesel fuel, as a surfactant used in cleaning products, an ingredient in personal care products, and in industrial lubricants. Founded in 2003, the company first rose to prominence with plans to develop synthetic, affordable artemisinin, an anti-malarial drug.
